Fire on Universal Studio

A large fire has broken out on a sound stage at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California.

The dramatic Sunday blaze that destroyed portions of the Universal Studios Hollywood back lot was accidentally touched off by company employees using a blowtorch to heat asphalt roofing shingles, authorities said.

Los Angeles County fire officials said two workers and a supervisor were putting up shingles in an alley on the New York Street set. They finished at 3 a.m., spent an hour watching for any sign of fire, then took a break.

Preliminary results of air tests at Universal Studios' smoky back lots Sunday found levels of benzene and other toxic contaminants six times or more above normal.

At those levels, firefighters and anyone else in the immediate vicinity of the blaze could have experienced respiratory irritation, South Coast Air Quality Management District spokesman Sam Atwood said. But Atwood added that

Even if you don't like someone, there is no need to lower yourself to their level. Be polite and courteous; show that you're the better man.

Do not lose your temper
When you lose your temper, you are showing everyone that you can't control your emotions. If you can't even control yourself, then how can you possibly control anything else? Keep your cool at all times (it won't be easy but it is worth the effort) and people will take positive note of your levelheadedness.

Do not interrupt
Let people finish what they are saying before adding your comments. Interrupting others is a sign of poor etiquette and a lack of social skills. If you want to come across as egotistical, you can do so by constantly interrupting.

Do not laugh at others' mistakes
This is perhaps one of the cruelest things one can do. When you mess up, the last thing you want is for someone not only to bring it to your attention, but to ridicule you on top of that.

Remove your hat indoors
This rule seems to have gone out the window these days. You should remove your headwear upon entering a building. Furthermore, never keep your hat on while at the dinner table. It reflects very poor etiquette.

Review: Iron Man

The Skinny: Iron Man, based on the Marvel comic book, is about billionaire weapons manufacturer and jet-setting playboy Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who has to do a serious gut check when he's kidnapped by Afghani terrorists and forced to build a missile. Instead, he creates a suit of armor that, with some refining, turns him into a superpowered hero known as Iron Man.

The Good: It doesn't reinvent the genre, but Iron Man is nearly note-perfect. It's genuinely funny, the special effects are bulletproof, the dialogue better than your average superhero movie, and the cast is flawless—especially Downey, who, in retrospect, seems as no-brainer a casting call as Patrick Stewart in X-Men. He's a comic book movie rarity—an adult hero who actually has his shit together, and whose call to action isn't rooted in childhood emotional trauma.

The Bad: There's actually not that much action, but oddly the movie doesn't suffer for it. Maybe that's because, unlike the similarly action-deprived Ghost Rider, the characters are more entertaining than the superheroics. So it's kind of a knock against the movie, but also kind of a positive. The climactic battle contains a few head-scratching moments (how can she…? And why doesn't he…? Argh, damn spoilers), but it's all forgivable.

What? Not to give it away, but the movie ends on an unexpected (and funny) cliff-hanger that leaves you wanting more, in the best way possible.

The Skinny: Almost 20 years after The Not-So-Last-After-All Crusade, the fourth Indiana Jones chapter finds an older Indy struggling to come to terms with a 1957 Red Menace America very different from 1930s World War II America. This time, he's trying to beat the Russians to a mystical skull that may have ties to ancient Mayan civilization…and beyond.

The Good: From the start, the tone is right on—Indy's a man out of his element and out of his era, so his creaks and cracks are meant to show. Ford seems happy to be back in the fedora. And even at its silliest the movie reminds us that, despite all the geeks' obsessive nit-picking, this stuff is meant to be fun. Shia LaBeouf is a good foil for Ford; the movie's best scenes revolve around their rapport.

The Bad: For a franchise that prided itself on stunt work, the use of CGI here, in a word, sucks. We could have done without the CGI gophers (thanks, George), the CGI Tarzan sequence (seriously, Lucas, retire), and the green-screen sword fight (Steven, you do know you can say "no" to him, right?). Commies are a weak substitute for Nazis, and this is also the laziest Indiana Jones story—characters and plotlines come and go without consequence.

There's Being Inspired, and Then There's Being Nagged: Spielberg said he finally relented and made Indy 4 after years of fans begging him to do it. Now, those same fan boys are ripping the movie for being uninspired. Guess what, guys: It's your fault.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - One of Brazil's last uncontacted Indian tribes has been spotted in the far western Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border, the National Indian Foundation said Thursday.

The Indians were sighted in an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area along the Envira River in flights over remote Acre state, said the Brazilian government foundation, known as Funai.

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and a large planted area. But it was not known to which tribe they belonged, the group said.

Survival International said the Indians are in danger from illegal logging in Peru, which is driving tribes over the border and could lead to conflict with the estimated 500 uncontacted Indians now living on the Brazilian side.

There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, the group said in a statement.

"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said.

"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.

Of all the wimpy, droopy ways men have ceded masculine power and swagger over the past several decades, none has been more pathetic than our neglect of the wristwatch. Ask a man what time it is and more often than not he hauls out his cellphone, as if it's some sort of bloated pocket timepiece, and tells you the digital answer. So nerdy. So androgynous. So . . . limp.

Things were not always thus. Men once carried big pocket watches in their vest pockets, attached with chains that would have made a rapper proud. These were plump, intricate machines, elegant fusions of jewelry and functionality that bespoke the person-ality of each man, who labored over selecting the one just right for him. A watch was a statement, an investment not only in the man you were, but also in the man you wanted to be. Like a fine suit or black leather jacket, like your high-heeled sneakers or alligator boots, it was -- and still is, for some -- an aspirational object. It provides a man with a feeling that he just might be a little bit better, a little more out there, a little . . .extra. Business is tough. Who among us couldn't use that kind of boost?

Fact is, a man's wristwatch follows the arc of his life. As boys we begin with the simple time-pieces that declare we are on the planet as a man-to-be. It's a functional affair: not much to look at, but it does the job. For many of us, it was a Timex. You looked at it lovingly after your parents gave it to you on your eighth birthday. It felt good on your wrist, like maybe you weren't totally a kid anymore. Like maybe your first girlfriend might be right around the corner.

Graduation came, either from high school or college, and someone close to you gave you an upgrade. A Breitling, maybe. The Swiss make good watches. Perhaps it was one you actually had to wind and set now and then, an activity that felt kind of odd and, ironically, sort of timeless. Your old watch went into a drawer, but you still looked at it once in a while and, when the mood struck you, wore it as a relic of the younger person you used to be.

Today, well, I don't know who you are, but if your watch is a phone, think about things for a minute. Are you doing well? What would the proper timepiece say about your success? Do you travel to a different time zone every month? How about one of those cool watches that serve the bicoastal? Most important, do you feel a certain weight about yourself as a man, a heft that a kid of 20 years of age just wouldn't comprehend? Why not wear it on a place close to your heartbeat?

Look how many pretty watches gleam in the window! Feel their size and substance, the power you have to choose this one crucial aspect of who you just may be.

Pittsburgh - Two monkeys with tiny sensors in their brains have learned to control a mechanical arm with just their thoughts, using it to reach for and grab food and even to adjust for the size and stickiness of morsels when necessary, scientists reported on Wednesday.

The new experiment goes a step further. In it, the monkeys' brains seem to have adopted the mechanical appendage as their own, refining its movement as it interacted with real objects in real time. The monkeys had their own arms gently restrained while they learned to use the added one.

In an editorial accompanying the Nature study, Dr. John F. Kalaska, a neuroscientist at the University of Montreal, argued that after such bugs had been worked out, scientists might even discover areas of the cortex that allow more intimate, subtle control of prosthetic devices.

Such systems, Dr. Kalaska wrote, “would allow patients with severe motor deficits to interact and communicate with the world not only by the moment-to-moment control of the motion of robotic devices, but also in a more natural and intuitive manner that reflects their overall goals, needs and preferences.”

Nicole Kidman has launched a scathing attack on ex-husband Tom Cruise -- accusing the actor of "manipulating" their adopted children.

The actress, who's expecting her first biological children with current husband Keith Urban, says Cruise -- who she divorced in 2001 -- has turned their adopted kids Isabella and Connor against her. She says, "It's a pity they have been manipulated by the father to distance themselves from me."

The 'Stepford Wives' star, 40, also said that she missed the two children and felt sad that they were apart. She said she tried to arrange a Mother's Day visit but the kids ended up spending it with Tom and his wife Katie Holmes. "They are closer to their new mom now," she admitted.

LOS ANGELES — The grown-up rocker triumphed over the smooth-voiced kid as David Cook claimed the "American Idol" title Wednesday, and it wasn't as much of a surprise as it seemed.

Unlike the never-ending Democratic presidential race, America won't have to wait long to find out who will win this year's "American Idol." But even before the singing champ is crowned Wednesday night, semifinalist David Cook has practically conceded the contest.

In an interview with UsMagazine.com following Tuesday night's show, Cook refrained from arguing with judge Simon Cowell's assertion that David Archuleta won the evening. "You know, everybody's got an opinion, and tonight was Archuleta's night," Cook reportedly told the site. "I have to concede it: The kid came out all three songs and nailed it. But I walk away from this with my head held high."

While Cook got positive remarks for his Clive Davis-chosen cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," Cowell preferred Archuleta's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," as well as his reprise of John Lennon's "Imagine." After the first song, Cowell speculated that the crown might rest on Archuleta's head after the final elimination.

When the skin puffs up, the lattice of protein, fats, and oils tends to rupture, creating damage that is difficult to reverse. Dr. Thornfeldt outlines four ways to smooth out your skin.

Four Ways to Stop Secret Sources of Aging

Watch your workouts. Sweating exposes your skin to salt water, which can break down the skin's defenses and allow more ultraviolet light and pollutants to reach skin cells. Working out indoors, or before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. outdoors, can eliminate 80 percent of UVB penetration.

Check the back of the bottle. Propylene glycol, an ingredient found in prescription cortisones and many moisturizers and cleansers, can irritate the skin and cause inflammation.

Say no to processed foods. A diet high in white flour and sugar can create so-called glycation reactions between molecules in the skin. This reaction binds collagen and decreases elasticity, so the skin becomes more susceptible to fracture.

Simmer down. Emotional stress causes the release of immune compounds called histamines, which can cause inflammation and disrupt the matrix of skin cells.

Stay Safe and Cool by Tony Hawk

Action sports attract a lot of creative people, so the clothes are as artistic as they are athletic. Here's how to stay safe -- without losing your cool -- when you're going hard.

Save your skin. You don't need to armor up like a goalie to stay safe. I have learned to appreciate longer socks in any situation, because my shins are almost all scar tissue at this point. I also wear long-sleeved shirts when riding the biggest ramps -- it's so easy to get burns from sliding on any exposed part of your body. I need clothes that are flexible, but not anything that's excessively long or baggy and can catch or snag.

Play it safe. You aren't going to climb a ski hill in dress shoes, and you shouldn't try a difficult trick without a helmet. It never hurts to be cautious. My biggest mistake was in 2003 when I went for a loop on a full-circle ramp and I didn't have my helmet on. I was knocked unconscious, fractured my skull, broke my thumb, and fractured my pelvis.

Know when to pack it in. Clothing can't always beat the elements. I had to do an exhibition at an indoor skiing facility in Tokyo. I ended up skating in sweatpants under my kneepads and shorts, a thermal under a sweatshirt, and snowboard gloves. After 30 minutes, my board flew off the ramp and got wet, and the water turned to ice on my grip tape. Skate on a slippery board? The show officially ended then.

Tone it down. Crooked placement of Gothic art and English crests is the next big thing, especially when the stitching is offset or the graphics are purposely tainted. The subtler the better, though -- you definitely don't want to overdo it. These can be placed anywhere (pants legs, pockets, shoulders) and still look good.
